English in the New Curriculum seminar was held by Mirjana Ljiljak-Vukajlović and Nada Čičić from 25-28.06.2003 in Prijepolje for English language teachers from Zlatibor District, and from 02-05.07.2003 in Valjevo for teachers from Mačva and Kolubara District. The main objective was to prepare the teachers for work with very young learners, i.e. the first grade students where English was to be introduced for the first time in September 2004, as part of a more comprehensive education reform in Serbia. The seminar, which was jointly organised by the Ministry of Education of Serbia and the British Council Belgrade equipped the teachers with the necessary skills for primary school teaching by training in the following areas: Working with Young Learners of English, Communicative Language Teaching, Using English in the Classroom, Listening as the Primary Skill, Speaking, Inrtoducing Reading and Writing, Creativity in the Classroom, Assessing Young Learners, Lesson Planning, and Reflection and Feedback. All the sessions can be found in the Primary ELT Teacher Training Manual, which was jointly published by the said institutions. The trainers mentioned above are co-authors of the session Creativity in the Classroom, together with Jelena Grubor from Kragujevac. Both seminars were highly appraised by the participants, who especially appreciated the applicability of its content and the fact that the language of instruction was English.
