TWO SKETCHES OF SKADAR LAKE

Scadar Lake – A Guidebook Entry

by Jelena Pejic, 18

Scadar lake is in the south-east of Crna Gora. Albania aslo has one part of this lake and it is the biggest lake in the Balkan peninsula.
Its surface area is 391 square kilometres and its water level is higher during the winter. There are a lot of small islands in it. Scadar lake has three tributaries: the Crmnica, the rivers Crnojevic and Moraca and a drain of the Bojana. Fishing is very popular there. Scadar lake includes a lot of various fishes. Many medieval manasteries and fortresses are located on the islands of this lake.

A Glimpse of Bliss at Skadar Lake

by Bojana Milekic, 16

The picturesque Lake Scadar is in Montenegro, in the south part of Yugoslavia.Only 20 kilometers separate this lake from the Adriatic sea. Three quarters of the lake belong to Yugoslavia and the rest to Albania. At the same time it is the largest lake in the whole country. Many people who travel on their summer holiday do not miss to pass near this national park, and a lot of them stop there to enjoy a wonderful view. There are strong reasons for my enthusiasm. Simply, the first moment when you arive there you'll feel the same way.

The most striking are certainly numerous flocks of birds. This lake is a reservation of many different sorts of birds, but there are also other animals. Probably the most interesting feature is the presence of pelicans, very unusual birds. These animals are present everywhere - in the air, in deep, clean water and in very abundant vegetation. They are the soul of this lake. When you stand in front of Lake Scadar, the water extends as far as the eye can see. However it doesn't look simple. The beauty of this place is filled up by the remote mountains of Montenegro which suround it.

There are some small islands in the lake. They are actually made of plants, but they are so solid that in some of them churches have been built. You cannot possibly imagine that nature can be so unspoilt and it makes you feel unusual. There is not much historical information about this lake; it is mentioned in a few folk poems.

This special place has a lot of special features. After all, in my opinion, there are no
words which can give due credit to the beauty of Lake Scadar.
