Are Fences More Important Than Houses?

Have all the people in this country gone mad? I` m not sure, but that` s what I think when I go to visit my grandparents in a village near Valjevo.

I have never met their first neighbours , but I often ask myself what kind of people can live in a place like that. There is nothing unusual about the house itself, but the fence is what makes it extraordinary.

The first thing you can see is that fence. It is made of concrete, and it looks like a medieval castle. It is probably the ugliest thing I have ever seen. When you see the fence, you expect that the house, which it surrounds, is enormous, but it is just a small, one-storey house.

I like to look at the faces of people that come with us to the village for the first time. The expression is always the same; they are shocked.

And so am I. I will never get used to it, no matter how often I pass by.
